A Brief History

Established in 1834 by the first European settler, William Nichols, part of the home which Nichols built is still standing. The first shipbuilding business at Port Cygnet was established by Nichols' grandson, John Wilson.

Cygnet was originally named 'Port de Cygne' (Port Cygnet) by Admiral Bruni D'Entrecasteaux, a french explorer who led an expedition to Australia in 1792. It was the first known visit to the Huon area by any European.
